The BRDC Formula 4 Championship and Champion of Brands provided some of the closest racing and tightest finishes on the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit, supporting British GT at the weekend.
The title fight in BRDC F4 is drawing to a thrilling climax with just six races left to go. A mere nine points now cover George Russell and Lanan Racing team-mate Arjun Maini, who narrowed the gap by taking a third-place, second-place and a win in the three races at the weekend.
Two first-time winners graced the top step in the first two races, Gaetano di Mauro and Chris Middlehurst. Di Mauro led every lap of race one, putting to rest his last lap loss at Silverstone two weeks ago. Lanan Racing team-mates Struan Moore and Maini kept him honest throughout to complete the podium.
Middlehurst’s debut win came after Maini handed him the lead with a spin at Sheene Curve. Will Palmer led the opening exchanges until a coming together with another car at Druids dropped him to eighth. Maini couldn’t force a way back past Middlehurst after recovering from his spin; Russell picked up his first podium in third.
Maini made amends for allowing race two to slip from his grasp by holding off di Mauro for the race three win. Moore’s third place secured the third double podium of the day for Lanan Racing. Maini’s win moved him into second in the standings ahead of HHC’s Raoul Hyman, who could only manage 12th.
The day was concluded by a typically thrilling Champion of Brands race, the series’ fourth and final race of 2014. Scott Malvern took his second win of the year by leading every lap under intense pressure from Oli White. The lead gap barely stretched over a couple of tenths of a second and the pair crossed the line a nose-cone apart, Malvern edging it by just 0.047s.
The fight to join them on the rostrum was almost as close, as Joey Foster used his experience to deny impressive youngster Ciaran Haggerty a debut podium. Haggerty led onto the final lap, just, but Foster held the line at Paddock Hill to claim third.
MSVR moves on to Silverstone this weekend with F3 Cup, MSVT Trackday Trophy, MSVT Team Trophy, Atom Cup and a Silverstone All-Comers race. Entries are still open for any sport, GT, and saloon car, email email@example.com for more details.
