Two-time Sports 2000 champion Oliver Stirling has joined
Stanbridge Motorsport for F3 Cup's rounds nine and ten, taking
place at Oulton Park this Saturday (19 July).
Stirling, 31, will be racing in the Trophy 01 Class, driving the
Dallara F301 previously campaigned by Fraser Smart. The
Wirral-based driver began his racing career in single seaters,
competing in a Lola T642E in Monoposto and Formula Ford Kent,
before moving on to sports cars.
This weekend will be Stirling's first race in single seaters
since 2004, when he graduated from Monoposto into Sports 2000.
After winning every race, he became the Sports 2000 Historic
champion in 2008 and followed that up with the Pinto title in 2009,
making club history by being the first driver to win the overall
title in a Historic Class car, a Tiga SC80.
More recently, Stirling claimed class honours by two laps at
last year's Spa 6 Hours Festival, co-driving a Lotus Elan 26R to
seventh overall, finishing ahead of five more powerful Ford
Oulton Park is a happy hunting ground for Stirling, who holds
the Sports 2000 lap record at the Cheshire track.
Stirling said: "I'm delighted to be making my F3 Cup debut this
weekend and I'm really looking forward to getting behind the wheel
of a Formula Three car. The quality of the drivers in F3 Cup
is testament to how well run the series is. I will do my best to
shake up the order and I'm relishing the challenge."
James Simons, who runs Stanbridge Motorsport, added: "I'm really
pleased to have Oliver with us at Oulton Park. He knows the circuit
well, being an instructor at Oulton, but it will be his first time
driving an F3 around there. I'm confident he'll get up to speed
quickly and be able to compete for the class win."
Stanbridge Motorsport could be fighting for a double Trophy 01
Class podium at Oulton Park this weekend with a return for Roberto
Tirone also possible.
