A brace of third-in-class finishes at the last rounds at
Spa-Francrochamps, Belgium, has given Lee Morgan a confidence boost
at the midway mark of the 2014 F3 Cup season.
The two podiums bettered Morgan's best-ever finish in the
championship, two fifth-places at Silverstone in April, and moved
him to third in the points standings.
It was the 2013 Formula Jedi champion's first taste of racing at
the home of the Belgian Grand Prix, and the perfect place to score
his best-ever result.
Morgan said: "All round it was a great result. It's a fantastic
track and it was great fun driving it. Two third places were as
good as we could have expected really because Toby was fast all
weekend. It was a good result to kick-start the second half of the
Morgan was in the thick of the action all weekend, battling hard
with Mark Harrison, particularly in round eight on Sunday.
"Mark and I were pretty close on every lap, I think he was
running less wing, so I was catching him in the corners, but he
dragged a gap out on the straights. It made it a good battle. I
finally got past into the last corner on the brakes and was able to
run him a little wide. I got the power down to hold him off and
then managed to get away.
"We dropped the pack quite quickly and it was then a case of
picking through the traffic as quickly and as cleanly as
F3 Cup next races at Oulton Park on Saturday 18 July. Morgan
will be hoping for better fortunes there than he suffered in his
Jedi last season - it was the only weekend in 2013 he failed to
reach the top step, and gave him first DNF of the year.
