11/09/2012 - Close finishes proved to be the topic of discussion
following MSVR's annual trip to Anglesey for the Races of Wales on
The thrill a minute Lotus on Track Elise Trophy, the high speed
single seaters of the F3 Cup and the popular Club MSV Team Trophy
all produced great racing and plenty of talking points.
Lotus on Track Elise
Andy Dolan came through a dramatic final lap drag race to secure
his first win of the season by the slimmest of margins from local
man Craig Denman in the Lotus on Track Elise Trophy.
The Elise Trophy has been renowned for its close racing but
Dolan's triumph in race one will go down as one of the closest ever
finishes in its illustrious history.
The Scot was the star of qualifying as he grabbed pole by a
three tenths of a second from Denman with Ben Hyland in third. The
trio were separated by just six tenths of a second. But all Dolan's
hard work in qualifying quickly unravelled on the opening lap as he
fell to fifth. Denman took the lead from Hyland while Dolan began
to recover the lost ground.
Hyland was close on Denman's tail but was unable to exploit any
gaps to take the lead. Just behind them a hard charging Dolan was
coming through and determined to at least finish on the podium. As
the final lap began, Dolan managed to move onto the tail of Denman
and a terrific battle unfolded, which came down to the final
corner. Dolan managed to get a better run on to the start/finish
straight to take the flag by 0.082s seconds. Hyland secured the
final spot on the podium in third.
However, not to be outdone Denman finished his weekend on a high
with a win in the second race in front of his home crowd. He
finished ahead of Ben Hyland, who just got the better of Dolan by
three tenths at the flag.
Rising single seater star Sean Walkinshaw showed his class by
recording an impressive double victory on his F3 Cup debut smashing
the Anglesey International circuit lap record in the process.
The Chipping Norton driver teamed up with Lanan Racing for the
F3 Cup's trip to the North West and despite this being his first
taste of F3 he flourished, whilst the championship battle took
He said: "It's absolutely fantastic to do so well on my first
weekend in the F3 Cup. It's been a step-up for me but not a large
step. Lanan Racing is a great team and I've really enjoyed working
with them, this experience has given us something to think about
for next year."
Qualifying belonged to Walkinshaw as he smashed the lap record
posting a 1m20.627s to grab pole from title contender Gino Ussi and
James Abbott. Championship leader Tristan Cliffe was fifth while
fellow title hopeful Chris Dittmann was ruled out of the meeting
due to engine failure.
Walkinshaw stalled on the green flag lap for race one but he
made no mistake on the start and moved into a comfortable lead.
Ussi pushed him hard in the opening laps but the 18-year-old was
too strong. The real battle was for third position and it was Chris
Needham, who held his nerve to deny a hard charging Abbott by a
tenth, with Cliffe in fifth.
Race two followed a similar pattern with Walkinshaw completing a
comfortable win but the battle for the podium places raged. Prajesh
Shah produced the best drive of his season to overtake Needham to
claim an impressive second with Abbott in third. Cliffe was forced
to retire leaving him with a slender lead in the championship.
Club MSV Team
The pairings of Steve Smee/Martin Scholfield and Andrew
Ball/Richard Hughes shared the victories in the two frantic one
hour Club MSV Team Trophy encounters at the Anglesey International
The annual trip to Wales for the Team Trophy didn't disappoint
as a field of novice racers fought tooth and nail for honours.
Qualifying set the tone with Ball/Hughes just edging
Smee/Scholfield to the pole. The start of race one saw the pair
split by the fast starting Lotus Elise of Antony Sharpe and David
Scarborugh before a spin handed the lead back to Ball and Hughes.
In the end the Honda Integra proved to too strong and it was
Smee/Scholfield who took the win. Race two provided a similar story
but this time Ball/Hughes secured the win from Smee/Scholfield
after an epic dice.
