The International GT Open Series returns to Brands Hatch for the
third successive year this weekend (July 13-15), co-headlining with
the FIA Formula Two Championship. The Spanish-based series has
grown in stature as the entry list features an increasing number of
Included in the entry list for the weekend's race are two former
Formula 1 drivers who have already stood on the top step of the
podium in the series this season. Italians Gianmaria Bruni and
Andrea Montermini both race Ferrari 458 GT Italias, however both
have had to give best to other marques in the title race as the
series enters its halfway stage.
So far consistency has placed the Porsche 997 GT3 RSR of Raymond
Narac and Patrick Pilet at the top of the pile but just four points
adrift is the similar car from marque specialists Manthey Racing.
Their driving squad features Marco Holzer and Nick Tandy. The
latter has a reputation of one of the world's best Porsche drivers,
with multiple wins in the rear-engined car over the years. Having
raced at Brands Hatch from his early days in Minis and Formula
Ford, he is perfectly placed to assume the title lead at home.
However there are expected to be a few wild card entries at
Brands Hatch, with the series popular amongst local GT racers.
British GT frontrunner David Ashburn is poised to race in a
Trackspeed 997 and will be a serious contender for overall
Also amongst the entries is Archie Hamilton, who hails from a
racing family. Grandfather Duncan was a legend in sportscars, whose
achievements included winning the 1953 Le Mans 24 Hours.
In addition to top drivers, the International GT Open Series has
attracted a wider variety of cars too. Aston Martin have strong
representation, whilst a brace of Corvettes will be on the grid and
even a Lotus Evora, driven by factory driver Johnny Mowlem. With
classes for GT2 and GT3-specification cars racing on the Grand Prix
circuit on both Saturday and Sunday, the races are certain to be
