05/07/2011 - Ivan Bellarosa recorded an impressive double win at
the latest round of the SPEED EuroSeries at Italy's Imola
While Bellarosa proved to be the class of the field at Imola,
Englishman Dean Stirling continues to lead the championship
standings, with four races of the season remaining.
After claiming pole position in qualifying, Wolf driver
Bellarosa used his local circuit knowledge to his advantage and
stormed to victory in race one. The Italian made a good getaway
from the start but was forced to take evasive action to avoid a
start line incident, involving the Reader/Burke Juno, the
Clucas/Bradshaw WFR and the Rashid/Hollings Ligier.
Bellarosa soon leapt into a commanding lead and he eventually
took the chequered flag from Donington Park double winners Warren
Hughes and Jody Firth. Level 5 Racing's Scott Tucker finished third
with the RLR Msport Ligier of Greg Murphy and Melroy Heemskirk in
Frantic work in the pits overnight saw 10 cars return to the
grid for race two, but it was Bellarosa once again who surged into
the lead on the opening lap. It was left to Daren Burke and Dean
Stirling to keep the Italian honest. The pair soon became involved
in a thrilling battle for second, which allowed Bellarosa to gallop
into an eight second lead at the front.
By lap seven, Stirling managed to get the better of Burke for
second spot but he was unable to catch Bellarosa after the round of
mandatory pit stops. The Wolf car clinched it's second win of the
weekend by 25 seconds from championship leader Stirling, with Burke
claiming the final step on the podium.
The SPEED EuroSeries will return to action on 11 September
when the championship heads to Silverstone.
