MSVR will organise a major new single seater event at
Brands Hatch this year to replace A1GP when the Kent circuit
welcomes Superleague Formula by Sonangol for the first time on 31
July/1 August.
Superleague Formula is the fusion of two of the world's most
popular sports - football and motor racing.
The single seater series, which was launched in 2008, features
identical 750bhp V12-powered single seater race cars bearing the
colours of some of the world's leading football teams including
Liverpool FC, Tottenham Hotspur and AC Milan.
A number of famous racing drivers have represented their football
club in Superleague Formula, including former Toro Rosso F1 driver
Sebastien Bourdais, who raced for Sevilla in 2009.
The two-day event includes three Superleague races and will begin
with a qualifying shootout - similar in format to a knockout
football tournament. The quickest car will start on pole position
for Sunday's first race.
Race two will feature an exciting reverse grid, where the fastest
cars from the first outing will make their way through from the
back of the field. Each race is approximately 45 minutes long,
equivalent to half a football match.
The point scores for the first two races are then combined, and the
top six teams go through to a five lap 'Super Final' shootout. This
sprint dash decides the overall weekend winner and a cash prize is
offered to the top three teams.
Robin Webb, Superleague Formula Competitions Director, said: "It
gives me great pleasure to announce Brands Hatch as part of our
exciting 2010 calendar. It's certainly a driver favourite and
thanks to MotorSport Vision's commitment and professionalism, it is
a circuit that the championship as a whole is really looking
forward to visiting.
"The high-speed layout offers our cars the chance to properly
stretch their legs. It's also a great place to watch motorsport, so
we're confident that fans, especially those of Tottenham which
isn't too far away, will be there cheering on their team."
MotorSport Vision Chief Executive Jonathan Palmer added: "I'm
delighted that Brands Hatch will host Superleague Formula this
season, and it's fantastic to add another prestigious single seater
series to the calendar alongside the FIA Formula Two
Championship.
"The Superleague cars are even more powerful than the A1GP cars and
with their V12 engines sound absolutely amazing. They are
impressively big cars too so with the reverse grids it will be a
fabulous spectacle for fans of motorsport and football alike."
