Laverty closes in on Daily Star Cup

John Laverty defied the pain of the multiple injuries he suffered in a heavy crash at Knockhill to take a second place and then a victory to extend his lead in the Daily Star Cup at Cadwell Park.

The Ulsterman was riding with broken ribs and ligament injuries to his right knee and his neck but was charging hard to put his Buildbase NW200 Ducati into contention.

In the opening race at Cadwell Park though he had to settle for second best as Gary Mason took the win for the Quay Garage Honda to take his fifth victory of the year.

Mason said after the first race: "That was a good race and I really enjoyed it. The tyres were spinning up a bit but I have to thank the team for their big effort in rebuilding the bike after my crash in free practice."

But Mason's hopes of a double victory were shattered on the opening lap of the second race when he crashed spectacularly at Coppice on the opening lap. This left Laverty in command and he went on to take his ninth victory; one that he hardly expected.

Laverty said: "I'm over the moon with the win as I really didn't think it would be possible this weekend. I hardly expected to be racing here and have to thank my physio for getting me into shape to race. I'm feeling pretty sore and came here just wanting to get points and keep ahead in the standings but I am now looking forward to Croft where I can hopefully wrap up the title."

Chris Burns meanwhile maintained his record of standing on the podium in every race he has finished this season, moving him within 13 points of third place in the standings ahead of his home race at Croft.

Burns said: "Because Cadwell Park is such a narrow circuit, being 21st on the grid made life extremely difficult. My fastest lap was as quick as Mason and quicker than Laverty so it was frustrating to be so far back on the grid. I am confident that if we had been able to qualify, where we know we should have, it would have been a different race altogether. In race two my rev counter went on the blink making a good start difficult and once I got on the pace again I found myself stuck behind Jessop and by the time I had a good passing opportunity I had run out of laps to close the gap and press for the race win in the Cup."
