Jamie Thorburn bagged himself a position in next month's Mazda Road To Indy Scholarship Finals in the United States, when he won the SuperSeries Shootout at Silverstone's iZone Driver Performance on Friday.
Thorburn qualified for the end-of-season competition by becoming the Champion of Brands in September, and was announced as the Shootout winner after a day of tests and evaluations at iZone's Silverstone facility.
"I am in shock to be honest," said Thorburn. "Winning the SuperSeries Shootout has presented me with an opportunity to compete in the Mazda Road To Indy Finals next month, and I am to grab this opportunity with both hands."
Thorburn defeated fellow Shootout finalists Jack Kemp, Ross Martin, Seb Melrose and James Roe Jnr to win his trip to the United States.
All SuperSeries Shootout finalists qualified for the Silverstone event having secured Quantum Racing Suspension Driver of the Race nominations in Formula Ford 1600 events organised by James Beckett Motorsport and MotorSport Vision Racing (MSVR) during the 2017 season. Oliver White withdrew from the Shootout on the eve of the competition due to being handed a 'wildcard' to the MRTI Finals for his performance in the recent Walter Hayes Trophy, while Niall Murray opted not to participate.
James Beckett said, "Jamie is thoroughly deserving of his victory in this Shootout. He drove superbly to win the Champion of Brands in September, and performed well here at iZone to secure the top spot. I wish him the very best of luck in the United States."
MSVR's Motorsport Event Coordinator Joe East, a member of the judging panel, commented "The SuperSeries Shootout is a great opportunity for young drivers in the UK to win the chance to showcase themselves on the other side of the Atlantic. All candidates were very impressive on the day and I have no doubt it won’t be the last we hear and see of them. MSVR is proud to be associated with the process through the SuperSeries and would like to wish all the best to winner Jamie Thorburn, as the competition progresses in the USA in December."
